Jazz Portraits

Photographing jazz musicians is a tricky business. It is relatively easy to take a good jazz photograph because the subject matter is usually compelling and energetic. At the same time, it is difficult to take an excellent jazz photograph, because it’s too easy to get good results and clichés abound.  One element that can help in the transition from good to somewhat better is continuing and unhampered access to musicians. I’ve had a great advantage in this regard because 95% of my jazz photographs were taken at concerts, festivals, events or recordings that I produced or coproduced, and was, therefore, ultimately in charge. After producing hundreds events for over forty years, I've managed to take many jazz-oriented photographs. These are some of the better ones.
